2010-12-15, Paul McQueary, San Juan Rotary Club

Club president, Richelle Ponder rang the bell to open the meeting. John Pickett gave the invocation. Richelle then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Ross Ramsey led the club in singing “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Then we greeted one another and learned later that Rick Jackson was the mystery greeter. We had 4 guests of Rotarians, and one visiting Rotarian.

Ross RamseyThere was the final reading for Barbara Andrew, a prospective new member. In addition, the Nominating Committee proposed our slate of officers and directors for 2011-2012:

Asst. Sec/Tres: Bill Harty
2013 Director: Alex Keatts

The ProgramDon;t Meth With Us logo

In a compelling presentation, fellow Rotarian from Farmington NM, Paul McQueary showed us a PowerPoint message about the problem of methamphetamine. Meth is the most additive drug around. It is 5 times more addicting that cocaine or heroin. It is so bad that the country of Thailand has declared war against meth.  60-70% of property crime is committed by meth addicts.

speaker Paul McQuearyPaul was here to show us how the Rotary club in San Juan County is going to schools with video presentations to show 5th graders what meth does to your body. In Farmington, the first year, there were 39 juveniles in detention for meth use. Today, three years later, there are none in detention. The program “scares the dickens out of the kids” and leads to avoidance of use. Meth is so much in demand in the U.S. that it is cheaper to buy it already made than to make your own. When targeting children, the distributors lace sweet candy with meth. The nearby drug cartels thrive on the use of meth in America. San Juan Rotary has produced a number of video presentation/advertisements to discourage young people who are tempted to try it. In a theater ad which shows before the main features, the club estimates that in one year over a million viewers see their campaign presentation.

Paul concluded by encouraging our club to get behind this initiative. The problem is down here as well as in northwestern NM.

After the Program
