2011-01-12, Steve Loman, Janet Green, and Howard Ness: Gubernatorial Inauguration

President Richelle Ponder called the meeting to order. Mel Parish gave the invocation and Prez Richelle lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Janet Green, our song leader selected “My country tis of thee”. From my corner of the room, it sounded good.

After a period of meeting and greeting each other, we had introduction of guests and student guests, Tra Tran, Jacquelin Huerta, Issac Hartman, Kori Gonzales, Lindsey Mitchell, and Jessica Rhodes. They were reminded that at the last meeting of the month they will give their three minute talk on “What do I want to be when I grow up” (future plans, that is.)

The Four-way test essay contest will be on Feb. 10. We need monitors, judges, etc to help. See Jim Parks.

The Rotarian Happy few minutes, I mean “Happy hour” will be held at De La Vega’s Thursday at 5:30 PM. You all come.

Taste of Las Cruces project is gearing up for June. Our three clubs will be participating. Our Representative, Barbara Rose asked for volunteers to help recruit restaurants and to assist in other areas, including ticket selling (and buying). Our club voted to use our share of the proceeds for the “Don’t Meth Program”.

The can proceeds for the remainder of this fiscal year will go to the beautification/Day of service project. Bring many “Happy Dollars” and help Wanda with this project.

Remember the “Choose the cruise” District 5520 annual fund raiser. Ticket stubs must arrive before April 8, 2011. Cash, check, moneyorder, right arm accepted. Someone will win but on our experience it may be Paulina.

Don’t forget the El Paso, Las Cruces, Juarez Rotary clubs “Celebrando La Comprension Mundial” el 4 de Febrero, 2011 a las 6:30 P.M. en Hotel Camino Real, El Paso, Texas.

The Program

President Richelle turned the podium over to program chair Barbara Nelson. Barbara announced that due to illness our scheduled speaker could not be here but that our program would be three members of our club who attended the inauguration of Governor Susana Martinez, one of whom had to go back to the hotel at 10:00 PM because it was past his bed time. They braved the cold weather along with thousands of others.

Governor Martinez logoFirst to speak was Steve Loman. He said it was 11 degrees outside. The inauguration/celebration was attended by over 2000 people, many young people-it was standing room only, excitement was incredible. He thanked Janet Green, the celebration planner/organizer, for doing an excellent job. There were many other Southern New Mexicans in attendance.

Next was Janet Green who told us that the cold weather reminded her that Governor Martinez is a big supporter of the “Koats for Kids”program, but we also need coats for adults. This was a very special event because at midnight Dec. 31 we have a change in power. Janet served as mistress of ceremonies. With temperatures in the single digits, Susana Martinez took the oath of office Jan. 1 on the Santa Fe Plaza and became our Governor. Our new Secretary of State, Dianna Duran also took the oath of office-she is third in line of succesion if the Governor and Lt. governor are out of the state. The Governor will appoint a new District Attorney to fill the position she vacated, and will name a replacement for Senator Dianna Duran, now Secretary of State. Janet said we could not play “Hail to the chief” because that is reserved for Presidents.

Howard Ness told us it took 3 hours to check in at the hotel, New Years morning temperature was -3 degrees, and he had to stand in line for two and a half hours to shake hands with the Governor and the “First Dude”. This was an historical moment but it was well worth it and would do it again. He also thanked Janet, as we all did, for doing an excellent job.

Thanks Janet.

After the Program

The 50/50 was won by Bill Harty. The can collected $85 for the club project.

We ended the meeting by reciting the Four-Way Test.

Sorry for no pictures, I think my camera retired.
