2011-11-16, Megan McQueen's Alma de Arte Choral Group

On a gorgeous fall afternoon, the regular Wednesday meeting of the Rotary Club of Las Cruces was called to order by President Ross Ramsey at 12:16 p.m.  After he led the Pledge of Allegiance, Barbara Rose Farber’s invocation led into Earl Phillips leading the singing of “America the Beautiful.”  Before our “meet and greet,” John Pickett and President Ross took note of Rotarian Curt Coleman’s ninetieth birthday on the 17th, and led the spirited singing of “Happy Birthday.”

Steve Loman hawked Salopek Farms pecans for the Las Cruces Aquatic Team.  Jim Parks and Earl Phillips introduced their spouses who were visiting.  John Pickett’s guest Kris Lundgaard is a teacher in Slovakia.  Our four high school students were introduced.  Gus Gandara was the mystery greeter.

Happy dollars abounded.  Barbara Rose is heading to a travel convention in Las Vegas.  Curt Coleman made a gift in memory of his parents, who “would have been quite surprised that he made it this far.”  John Hernandez donated in honor of his across the street neighbors from Alma de Arte being today’s program.  Jim Maxon honored the victorious Aggie football team.  Richelle Ponder urged all to get out and support Aggie men’s basketball against UTEP on Saturday.  Bill Harty reminded that Aggie women’s basketball played UTEP that night, and that the men’s game against UNM would be on the radio for the ride home.  Chris Dulany announced a Holiday Happy Hour at 5:30 p.m. on December 1 at the Double Eagle.  President Ross noted that there would be a club assembly next week.

The Program— Megan McQueen and the Alma de Arte Choral Group

Ted SheltonNovember program chair Ted Shelton introduced Alma de Arte teacher Megan McQueen.  She is a Mayfield and NMSU alum who has performed in a number of local shows, including “We are Enron” for the Doña Ana Lyric Opera, and 22 different shows at the Boba Cabaret.  She has been a teacher at Alma de Arte since the school’s beginning in 2004.

Megan introduced her students in the Elite Ensemble.  This after-school group is selected by audition, and represents the best of her female students.  They represent all classes at Alma de Arte, with one freshman and several seniors.  Accompanied by Diane Schutz on the piano, the group performed popular songs from the 1960’s, including “Lollipop,” “Somewhere” and “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story, “My Boyfriend’s Back,” and “Rockin’ Robin.”  The group will perform again on December 13 as part of the “Every Other Tuesday” concert series at the downtown Rio Grande theatre.

After the singing concluded, Megan informed us that the Alma de Arte musical this year would be “Barnum.”

After the Program

Barbara Rose Farber won the 50/50 drawing before Treasurer Paulina Salopek reported that $40 was raised for El Caldito Soup Kitchen.  The meeting closed with President Ross leading the recitation of the Four-Way Test.
