2011-12-14, Mayfield Madrigal Singers

President Ross Ramsey welcomed all to the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance.  John Pickett’s invocation wished shalom to all, and President Ross led us in the spirited singing of three carols:  “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” “O’ Little Town of Bethlehem,” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

President Ross RamseyBecause there were so many guests, President Ross had them introduced before we started visiting individually.  He started by introducing Renata Fugugati, who was once an exchange student here from Brazil, and her family.  Several Rotarians brought their spouses for the musical program, and we welcomed Marta Scott, Janet McPherson, Chris Ramsey, Gary Podris, Jennifer Taylor, Linda Seaton, and Sue Groth.  Matt Holt hosted two guests who participate in the Teach for America program in Gallup.  Chris Dulany introduced Lauren Adee from NMSU Athletics; they are both happy to have their fall accounting class behind them.

Ramsey guestsThe can was passed to cover the transportation for and make a contribution to the Mayfield Madrigal Singers.  After the “meet and greet,” Howard Ness purchased at auction a handbag that Barbara Rose Farber brought back from Las Vegas, and blue badges were issued to new members Jim Berry and Rick Merolla.  Past president Richelle Ponder reminded us of the nominating committee slate of officers and directors to be considered at next week’s annual meeting:  for President, Eddie Groth; for President-elect, Ana Mangino; for Secretary, Bill Harty; for Treasurer, Paulina Salopek; for Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Chris Dulany; for directors, Wanda Mattiace, Blaine Goss, and John Strebler.  Directors Alex Keatts, Barbara Law, Mel Parish, and Mark Santiago will complete the second year of their two-year terms, so will not need to be again elected.

President Ross then introduced the director of the Mayfield High School choirs, Beth Borchert-Thomas.  The fifteen students in the Madrigal Singers introduced themselves to the club, not quite audibly enough for me to collect all the names for Spokes and Cogs.  There were four seniors (a couple of whom plan to attend NMSU), and one freshman.  They gave a wonderful performance of six pieces:  Alfred Burke’s “Caroling, Caroling” and “Long Ago”; “Touro Louro Louro,” for which the group received a superior plus rating at the small group festival; John Rutter’s “Angel’s Carol”; Hebrew song “Erev Shel Shoshanim”; and the one “fun” number (according to Ms. Borchert-Thomas, although the group seemed to enjoy them all), “The Twelve Days After Christmas.”

Mary Ellen McKay won the 50/50 drawing and immediately donated the proceeds to the can, which came to $280 for the Mayfield Choirs.  The meeting closed with the recitation of the 4-way test.
