2015-10-07, Club Assembly, Las Cruces Rotary Foundation

President Alex called the meeting to order at 12:11 p.m.  Kristi Granados gave a Native American inspired invocation.  President Alex then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Patty Groth assisted by Kristi Granados, Blaine Goss and several of their special invisible friends led us in the song: “SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS.”

We did reasonably well considering that no one present could spell the title.  Rotarians were asked to greet each other.  The mystery greeter was Lyn Ames.  The Sergeant at Arms discovered that one of our fellow Rotarians, Patty Groth, appeared prominently on the Celebrity Page of the Las Cruces Sun News.  She was fined!!

Happy $$$:  Ross: 4th great grandson; John Hernandez: introduced his guest, Soto, and said: “I’m just mighty glad to be here!! James Gerwels: Happy $5 for the three visiting high school students.  He apologized to the Sergeant at Arms for not having a three dollar bill;

Present Alex led us in singing “Happy Birthday” to our Rotarians whose birthdays are in October.  David Yaryan introduced the Associate Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the GREAT NMSU Basketball Team with several happy $’s.  Associate Head Coach, Tamara Inoue, gave a happy $ and an update on this year’s team.  All of last year’s players are back plus a couple of outstanding new ones.  It will be a great season.  Blaine Goss and Bugs agreed with the Coach and tossed in a couple of happy $’s just for luck.  James Gerwels introduced our high school student guests: Diana Guerrero, LCHS; Katharine Payer, Oñate; Savannah Bush, Centennial.

The Program

A club assembly served as the program.  President Alex introduced Immediate Past President Bill Harty who presented a proposal to form the Rotary Club of Las Cruces Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation, to support the goals and projects of the Rotary Club of Las Cruces.  He presented a proposed set of articles of incorporation that included the purposes of the foundation.  Proposed article 3 (The purpose for the corporation) had five detailed paragraphs that covered past, present and about any future activities that the Rotary Club may want to pursue.  The Foundation would provide the vehicle for Rotarians and others to make tax deductible contributions to club projects, scholarships and other charitable activities.  The Foundation would have a Board of Directors and Officers separate from the Rotary Club of Las Cruces.  All active members of the Rotary Club of Las Cruces would also be members of the Foundation.  There would be an annual meeting of the Foundation for election of officers, etc.  There were a number of questions.  Past President Bill explained the difference between “current use” funds where the fund or gift is spent for its designated purpose versus “endowed” funds where only the interest or a portion of the interest is spent for the designated purpose.  The Foundation would be able to manage both types of funds.  After the conclusion of the Foundation discussions, Past President Bill gave an overview of Rotary International’s Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) initiative and the role of Rotary International in International Rotary Projects such as the program to eradicate polio from the planet and some of the projects in which our Club currently participates such as the Bi-district water projects in Mexico.

After the Program

Executive Secretary, Patty Groth, announced that we had collected $29 in the can to support the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” cancer research campaign.  Lya won the drawing and give it to the can.  President Alex announced that there will be a Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at noon at The Game.  Rotarians are invited to attend.  He then led us in the 4-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say and Do! (below, John Pickett and Greg Fant visit before the meeting)
