2017-09-27, Club Assembly

President-elect Kristi Granados called the meeting to order at 12:15. John Pickett gave the invocation. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Earl Phillips led the members in singing “God Bless America.” Wanda & Kristi followed by leading us in singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”  Our high school guests mainly listened to us as they were not familiar with the song. Our guests were introduced by Kristi and then we followed with Meet & Greet. We had no visiting Rotarians, but had 5 guests of the club.

The ProgramJared Brown and Garrison Bush

On the final club meeting of the month we hear from our high school students.  Two were present to give their speeches.

MHS student Jared Brown told us he plans to attend college to major in Business Administration and Computer Science.  He also mentioned that playing in the marching band is important to him as well. The person who was an influence in his life was his best friend for 15 years, Joseph. One of the lessons that he has learned is that even small acts of service are good. Jared enjoyed his time with us and he learned a lot about Rotary.

CHS student Garrison Bush is a Las Cruces native.  His parents taught him a lot. The most important influence is his life was his mother. Working hard was a value he learned from his Dad, even if was in an onion plant. He recalled a tennis match in which he was behind in “sets.” He simply told himself not to quit. He won the match in the last set. Garrison thanked the club for hosting him.  He liked being with us.

Happy Bucks:

The editor of this issue paid a fine for the fact that he and Richelle wore each other’s badge and only one person noticed the switch. Bill Mattiace was happy to be here. Charlotte Brockway paid for bragging rights of Oregon citizens over Washington state’s citizens. Theresa Aschbacher proudly announced that she is to be a grandmother soon. Jared, student high school guest, donated to the can in support of our own Aggies. Jim Scott (notorious UTEP supporter) paid $27 to the can since the Aggies beat his beloved Miners by 27 points in the recent football game.  In appreciation of his generosity the club sang a brief refrain of the “Eyes of Texas.” Richelle Ponder responded to Jim Scott and then Patty Groth was happy that the can was $20 richer after the accumulated coins in the cans were converted to paper money.

Classification Talk: Terry McGinnity

Terry received his blue club badge indicating that he fulfilled all of the requirements for our local membership in Rotary. In his talk he mentioned that he has been in the senior care profession for 32 years.  He started as a college graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 1985 he began working for Good Samaritan and moved to other campuses as needed.  He is now settled in Las Cruces. “Good Sam” has 240 locations in the USA. The Las Cruces campus has 155 apartments in addition to other living spaces for all care needs. He is happy in Las Cruces; and his three children are grown and living elsewhere.

Announcements:

Earl Phillips talked about the upcoming Paul Anka concert on November 5th in El Paso. It is part of a fundraiser for “Little Amigos.” Barry Fisher reported on the recent Rotary Exchange Dinner. About 50 people enjoyed the meal and the events at the function. John Pickett reported that the “Dress the Child” dinner is just about filled up.

After the Program

Patty Groth announced that the “can” collected $135 for Lya’s project.  The pot for the card drawing game is valued at $569. Barry Fisher had the winning red ticket. But his “luck” ran out when he did not pull out a joker from the deck. Next week, we do it again.

The meeting was closed with the 4-Way Test.
