2017-12-20, District 5520 Governor Doreen Fox Kelsey

President Lya called the meeting to order at 12:10. John Pickett gave the invocation. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Earl Phillips led the members in singing “God Bless America.” Patty & Fran followed by leading us in singing a spiced up version of “We wish you a Merry Christmas.” Our guests were introduced by Pres. Jordan and then we followed with Meet & Greet. We had two visiting Rotarians, and five guests of Rotarians.

Happy Bucks:  We had a merry time with happy bucks. Lyn confessed that he left his badge at home. He paid a fine. Charles Townley was happy about his New Zealand trip. Daniel, a tall Aggie fan, donated to the can because of the Aggies winning ways, and that he has a new coworker in Ana Mangino. Ana then stood up and declared that she had 2 Arizona Bowl tickets available. Patty Groth “is going under the knife” and is glad that she has health insurance. Sunny Kellerman thanked Fran Boldt and John Pickett for their recent roles in hosting exchange students. Bill Harty was happy that he will be in Colorado for Christmas, before going to the Arizona Bowl and a wedding. Lya was glad she will be spending the holidays with Jay’s mom and sister. John Pickett happily announced that there was a surplus of money from the Dress-the-Child program.  The funds were immediately used to dress additional children. Bobby Rankin was quite thankful for his family’s support here in Las Cruces.

The Program—Rotary Dist. Governor, Doreen Kelsey

Sunny Kellerman (from Silver City) introduced our District Governor who is currently in Rotary in Albuquerque.  She is banker and has been in NM since 2012.

Dist Gov. Kelsey declared that her main goal in her job is to support the local clubs. She acknowledged our club fundraising and outreach to charities. She reminded us the district meetings provide many opportunities to learn more about Rotary. The upcoming district meeting will be in Santa Fe.

Claiming to have a “weak NO muscle,” Doreen told her story about being in Rotary. Her first club was quite small. After 1 year, she was fast-tracked to the president-elect position. Unexpectedly, she got interested with Rotary overseas. She met a surgeon who encouraged her.  She applied for international grants, and ended up visiting Bangladesh. While there, she realized that there was lots to accomplish. So she quit her U.S. banking job.  While in Bangladesh, she became the Minister of Health.

During this time she met a young student named Pieta.  Doreen sort-of-adopted Pieta and her mother. She helped Pieta get a student visa in the U.S. Her mother also wanted a U.S. education.  In her generous way, Doreen left her position and returned to the U.S. to go back into banking. Today, she lives in Albuquerque. And Pieta and her mother are in college, in the U.S.A.

In Albuquerque, Doreen and husband Tony, host many exchange students through Rotary’s foreign exchange program.  Doreen still cannot say no!

After the Program

Patty Groth announced that the “can” collected $67 for the club project.  The pot for the card drawing game is valued at $25. Bill Harty had the winning red ticket. But his “luck” ran out when he did not pull out a joker from the deck. However, he did pull a face-card, worth a gift card. Next year, we do it again.

The meeting was closed with the 4-Way Test.
