2018-02-07, Dave Reiff, Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County

President Lya called the meeting to order sometime around 12:10 pm at La Posta Restaurant.  Kristi Granados offered a Buddhist prayer for peace as the invocation and Lya Jordan lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.  Then we all sang When The Saints Go Marching In, led by our own Jim Maxon.  Lya read the list of all Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries, and Club Anniversaries.  My goodness, there are some oldies but goodies in the group!

Nancy and John Simson from South Burlington, Vermont club joined us.  Nancy, John and Lya exchanged flags.  Matt Schnettler came with Keith Houser.  Matt is a new IT in Keith’s business.  Maria Vasquez and Candice Butler from Habitat for Humanity joined us to update us on the goings on of Habitat.  Diane Avery and Lori Shelfer were guests of the Brockway’s.  They have been hosting the Brockway’s during their transition.  Thank you for being so welcoming!  David Groth joined Sue and Patty at our meeting.  Nice to meet another family member.  Chris Hartman joined our motley crew as a guest of the club.  Last, but not least, our Mayfield High student guest, Nolan Barnes, and Centennial High student guest, Kaci Hoel, will be joining us for the month of February

John Hernandez was with us again and “Mighty glad to be here!”  Sue Groth is so happy that Val is finished with her cancer treatments.  Bill Harty had 60 Happy Bucks for his 60th birthday.  Jay had a Happy Buck for Kristi Granados’ return from leave!!  I’m happy to be back, too!  Daniel is happy that Steve kept him alive!  Charlotte is happy she can finally get her car into the garage.  Patty (and Sue) is happy that her brother is able to join us.  Ana Mangino paid for her announcement that she has Girl Scout Cookies for sale.  And last but certainly the most witty, Charles Townley is happy that even though his students have reminded him that he is older than dirt, he is still above the dirt!!!

We are looking for host families for visiting students.  We will get more information in the near future.  The next Board Meeting is Thursday, February 8, 2018, at The Game on Espina.  Our can project is Soles for Souls, a project providing shoes for kids in the LCPS.  Let’s get out there and get shoes for 50 kids.

Also, the NMSU Rotaract Club is up and running (thanks Greg Fant for all you have done to help).

The Program

Dave Reiff from DACC Adult Education presented our program on Literacy Volunteers of Dona Ana County.  The Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County is a non-profit organization, founded in 1984 and granted 501(c)3 status in February 2004.  The chief partner organization is the Adult Education program of Doña Ana Community College.  The trained volunteers provide FREE one-on-one tutoring to adults (16 and over) who want to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills or learn English as a Second Language.  The program is always in need of volunteer tutors and donations.  Tutors receive 8-10 hours of training, two Saturdays at DACC.  The time commitment is to meet with your learner 2 times per week for 2 hours.  Tutors and learners are matched based on similarities, availability, and learner needs.  All learner information is kept confidential.  Because 25% of New Mexican adults lack a high school diploma or GED and 50% of adults in Dona Ana County read at or below Literacy Level 2, anyone willing to volunteer could change the life of someone in our own county.

After the Program

Our speaker, Dave Reiff, pulled the ticket held by student Nolan Barnes.  Alas, Nolan didn’t pick a money card but received a prize anyway.  President Lya concluded the meeting by leading us in the 4-Way Test.
