2018-08-29, Paul Harris Fellow Presentations

President Patty Groth called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. Richelle Ponder lead us in prayer. Charlotte Brockway led us in Caissons and the Official Song of the US Army. Two NMSU Rotaract students, Arizona and Autumn, joined us. There were several guest of Rotarians due to the Paul Harris Fellow Awards. Other guests included June Briggs, wife of Dinus Briggs, and Mona Walker, daughter of Mary Ellen McKay. Due to the long program that was planned we did not meet and greet.  

The Program

Winifred “Freddy” Dresp was introduced as a Paul Harris Fellow by her husband Don. Freddy was born in Ohio, but grew up in Tucson Arizona, she received a Bachelor’s in Education and Biology from Xavier, a Masters in Natural Sciences from Arizona State University, and later received her Specialist in Education Degree from New Mexico State University. She and Don have two children, David and Jeanne. They consider their latest career titles as “grandparents.”

Bill Harty introduced Wanda Bowman and a Paul Harris Fellow. Wanda has been an owner and operator of a retail business in Las Cruces for nearly 5 decades. She and her Husband, Bob, owned La Fiesta TV and Music and Ashley’s Furniture Home Store. She is passionate about giving back to the community and is a member of the NMSU President’s Town and Gown Committee, Governor Martinez’s Youth Conservation Corps, Revolution 120, and the Dean’s Council of NMSU College of Arts and Sciences. 

Frances Faye Boldt was introduced as a PHF by her son Jonathan Boldt. Fran was born in Albuquerque and grew up in Clovis. She graduated with a BS in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University. She taught in various locations and spent 20 years at MacLaren School for Boys in Oregon. She has worked with violent offenders, sex offender programs, and a school rep for monthly case reviews. She is an active member of Morning Star UMC and is still active in several singing groups.

Larry Candelaria was introduced as a PHF by Jim Maxon. Larry is a Vietnam Veteran and retired Senior Army Field Grade Officer having served 2 tours in the Pentagon. Larry graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso and from Central Missouri University. He married his wife Connie at the American Embassy in Paraguay, South America. Larry served for 12 years as the Director of the White Sands Missile Range Veteran Affairs Service Office.

Terry McGinnity was introduced as a PHF by Ted Shelton. Terry was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He received a Degree in Psychology from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master’s Degree in Gerontology from University of Northern Colorado. In 2013, he accepted the position as administrator at Good Samaritan Society-Prescott Village and then accepted the Executive Director position at the Good Samaritan Society-Las Cruces Village. Terry is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He and his wife Lynda have three adult children and three perfect grandchildren.

Caroline Zamora was introduced as a PHF by Jay Jordan. She was born in Las Cruces and received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from New Mexico State University. She works for Aprendamos Intervention Team and is a freelance writer for Tu Revista Latina Magazine. She is passionate about helping young Latinas in our community attend college and co-founded the Latinas in Leadership Conference.

Dr. Barry Fisher was introduced as a Multiple PHF by Lya Jordan. Rtn. (Rotarian) Barry Fisher is a retired Bariatric Surgeon. He and his wife Rtn. Andrea Dresser have three children and no grandchildren yet. He has been active in the Rotary Fellowship Exchange and has hosted guests from South Africa, Chile, India, and Canada. Barry received national and international recognition for his research into bariatric surgery while he was a professor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Barry is a passionate about the Rotary Fellowship Exchange Program that fosters peace and understanding through travel and fellowship.

After the Program

Bill Harty read and email to us from the District Governor congratulating us as only one of four clubs in the district to be an All Paul Harris Fellow Club, a distinguished honor. Kristi Granados donated $10 to Every Rotarian Every Year in honor of Barry Fisher. The can report was $27 to the Arrowhead Robotics Club. The pot was at $490. Ana Mangino had the winning ticket and drew the Jack of Hearts and won a meal credit. We closed the meeting with he Four Way Test.
